You Are Welcome At Hillcrest
We feel that your first visit to Hillcrest United Methodist Church needs to be as enjoyable as possible. To get past those awkward details that might make you uncomfortable we have put together answers to some of those questions you may have. It is our hope that we can answer your questions here and it will help make your first, and subsequent, visits as enjoyable and meaningful as possible. If you have a specific question that is not covered here, please call our office at 832-0157.
Where is Hillcrest located?
Hillcrest is located right off the corner of Tusculum Road and Nolensville Road on the southeastern side of Nashville. The church is on Raywood Lane, about 100 yards from the Tusculum/Nolensville corner.
Where do I park? There are two parking lots on the property at HUMC. All parking is at the top of the hill onRaywood Lane. The front parking lot is closest to the sanctuary, but either parking lot is relatively close. Handicapped parking is located by the awning in the front lot and by the CLC doors in the back parking lot.
Where do I go when I get there?
Hillcrest is not so big that you will walk around without meeting someone. People meet and greet one another in the hallways, Fellowship Hall, and Narthex. If you head to the Narthex, just outside the sanctuary you can ask an usher or greeter for information about our Church, they will even help assist you in finding a seat if you like.
Sunday Morning worship – 8:30 & 11:00 a.m.
Sunday School – 9:40 a.m.
See our Services Page for more details.
Because our membership is diverse, our services include congregational readings, music (congregational and choir), prayers and sermons following in the Methodist tradition. The services are neither “high church” or “contemporary,” but focus on communicating and sharing the truths of the Bible and God’s direction in our lives.
Will I be singled out as a guest?
You are not asked to stand or speak during the services, but it would be appreciated if you were to provide us your name and address on the registration pads in the pews. We follow up with all our visitors if you let us know how to reach you.
Will I be expected to give money?
The ministries of Hillcrest UMC are supported not only by the voluntary financial contributions of its members but also by giving their time, talents and services. There are many ways you can serve and support the church, but as a first time visitor it is not an expectation.
May I participate in communion?
Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at both morning services. United Methodists practice open communion; all present may receive the sacrament if they so desire.
A professional nursery staff cares for infants through 5-year-olds Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to noon (and for other events during the week.) The nursery is on the ground floor at the opposite end from the main sanctuary (see map above). Children in Sunday morning worship may come forward to the chancel to take part in Children’s Moment. Afterward, they may follow directions to the nursery (3-4 year-olds) or to Worship Readiness (5K & 1st grade), or they may return to the pew with their parent(s).
What about small children’s activities?
Hillcrest has a wide range programs and activities for children from Sunday School classes to weekday programs to summer activities with Vacation Bible School. Conscientious, trained church members lead the programs, focusing on the spiritual growth of the children.
Do you have activities for teenagers?
Hillcrest has a very active youth fellowship that meets regularly on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. UMYF on Wednesday coincides with the church’s M.A.D.Wednesday programs. This time usually consists of fellowship, activity, and a Bible study. Sunday evening UMYF starts with a fellowship snack/supper followed by activities and lessons. The UMYF is very active in the TN Conference, participating in conference activities and serving in planning and leadership positions. The youth participate in mission projects that take them around the area. See the UMYF Homepage for more details.
How accessible is the building for physically challenged people?
There are two main locations for those who use wheelchairs to enter the building. Parking in the front lot and then by the CLC doors in the back lot enable easy access to the building. Inside the building it is easy to navigate as everything is connected either on the main floor through the hallways or tothe second floor of the CLC Building by elevator. The restrooms are handicap accessible.
What does your church believe?
Some of Methodism’s essentials include the belief that Jesus is the Son of God who died that we might be saved. We believe he rose from the dead and lives today with God our Creator. We believe Jesus is the only source of our salvation — rituals, good works or membership in a particular denomination does not save us. More information on the Beliefs of the United Methodist Church is available here.
